Music, film & TV, travel, wine, and gardening.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

It’s often said, but so true: Read, read, read; write, write, write; turn off the inner critic when writing, but turn it on when editing.

Watch the September 2016 Winning Novel Reading.

Performed by Kaleb Alexander

Novel Transcript of  HEARING THOUGHTS  by Anthony Diffley

Get to know the winning writer:

What is your novel about?

My novel is about a young New York city man who aquires the ability to hear other peoples after he mysteriously disappears from his friends, while on a camping trip. He does not know how to properly use this talent at first but when approached by the CIA, questioning about his disappearance, and having lost his wife on 9/11, it doesn’t take him long to know what to do with it.

What genres would you say this novel is in?

Science Fiction, Action Adventure

How would you describe this story in two words?

“Thought Provocative”

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

4) Most Watched Movie: Without a doubt- “The Godfather”

How long have you been working on this novel?

Prior to it being published in 2015, I worked on writing the manuscript, for my novel, in one year but had been working on the story for over five years. I wrote out the original story as a plot for a movie but when I showed it to a professional screenwriter, he suggested I rewrite it as a novel because he felt the story was too complicated to be written within the industry standard, one hundred and twenty page screenplay. He did love the plot though.

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

“The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”

What motivated you to write this story?

Two things- First, the story of Betty and Barney Hill. Second, the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

What artist would you love to have dinner with?

Robert DeNiro

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Hanging out with my children and family.

What influenced you to enter the novel contest?

Because I honestly believe I have written a very mind grabbing, thought compelling book.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Do not rush your work or feel compelled to finish quickly. Take your time and take serious breaks away from your writing. I got my best story ideas for my book right after spending one or two days away from it.

What Happens After “Happily Ever After” Introduction by Laura Garrett

Watch the February 2016 Winning Novel

Watch What Happens After “Happily Ever After” Transcript Reading:

Novel performed by actor Kaleb Alexander

Get to know writer Laura Garrett:
1. What is your novel about?

For those seeking a long-lasting relationship, this book will unlock the 5 secrets to relationship success.

This book is about a Fair Maiden, who pressured by her parents marries the first frog that turns into a man. Not really understanding relationships, the Fair Maiden quickly becomes unhappy and disillusioned. She sets off into the Kingdom, seeking the wisdom of the commoners on their experiences with relationships. It is here she re-encounters the Wise Fairy Guardian who happens to be offering a relationship seminar for all the Land.

Written as a fairytale narrative to make it fun and easy to learn the five most important tools needed to help build and sustain a healthy relationship with a significant other. A must read for individuals seeking a new relationship or for couples who are looking to improve the one they are in.

2. Why should this nove be read by people?

It is my greatest hope that the information presented in this book will help readers to re-evaluate their expectations in relationships and more importantly of their partners. We are all just human trying to live our lives the best we can with the hopes of finding a compatible partner to share it with. There are no super heroes or fairytales and if we can approach relationships for what they really are then perhaps we can alleviate the unnecessary broken hearts and love turning to hate that so often result from entering relationships for the wrong reasons.

3. How would you describe this novel in two words?

Amazingly creative and educational.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Under the Tuscan Sun

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

Approximately 6 months, it was completed in November 2014

6. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

I enjoy every novel for different reasons, depending on the mood I am in.

My most recent read, which I thoroughly enjoyed was the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

I have been a mental health therapist for over 20 years working with hundreds of individuals and couples who struggle with relationship issues. I wrote this book because I strongly believe that everyone deserves to be in a happy, healthy, long lasting relationship and I believe they exist, with some work and know how. Having both personal and professional experience with relationships I felt passionate about sharing the tools and skills that I offer my clients with others who may not otherwise seek counseling. The skills presented in this book use a cognitive behavioral approach that has been proven effective in the improvement of relationships.

8. What artist would you love to have dinner with?

I would love to have dinner with Michelangelo, I would be very interested in what inspired him to paint the Sistine Chapel.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am passionate about the cultural arts and movies. I am also passionate about helping others to live successful and fulfilling lives

10. What influenced you to enter the Novel Festival?

I wanted to extend my reach of my book to as many people as possible and the readings by actors seemed very innovative and exciting to me.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Writing the book is only half the battle, but the most rewarding part. While writing your book, work on your marketing, develop a platform and a pitch as marketing is the most challenging part.

But above all else, just have fun. If you enjoy what you are writing about, your passion will shine through.

February 2016 Novel Winner

Watch the transcript of WHO KILLED HONOR BRIGHT:

Get to know writer Patricia Hughes:

  1. What is your novel about?

The murder of Honor Bright at the behest of George, William Butler Yeats’s wife. Honor’s real name was Lily O’Neill. She was Yeats’s lover and had had his first son.

  1. Why should this novel be read by people?

Because this murder was carried out by the Irish Free State’s corrupt Minister of Justice and his recently established Garda Siochana, who organised a kangaroo court, silenced witnesses with fear of death, and produced false evidence to sway the jury to acquit the assassins.

True non-fiction.

  1. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

For five years, or ten if you count from when I discovered the facts about Honor Bright.

  1. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

Yes, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Brontë.

  1. What motivated you to write this novel?

Honor Bright was my grandmother and William Butler Yeats was my grandfather. My father was their illegitimate son. At the moment Yeats scholars do not acknowledge this because they fear the reaction of the Irish government. Nevertheless it’s still true.

Grayson Perry
