Chapter 1 Novel Reading: Briar Earth, by Paul Tapp

Performed by Val Cole

Get to know the writer:

What is your novel about?

Reluctance, tradition and coincidence. They bring together as princess and escort, an opiniative ‘silly girl’ and a ‘handsome captain’, who fails his diplomatic mission to keep her silent on contentious matters at her fox-hunting debut. A puppy hound and a missing fox-cub confound the biggest fox-meet of the year and bring an end to the cruel tradition.

What genres would you say this story is in?

Historic fantasy/Historic romance.

How would you describe this story in two words?

World’s collide.

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Casablanca

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

Summer Wine

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

The Woman In White (Wilkie Collins)

What motivated you to write this story?

As a kid I watched my grandpa and his dogs race rabbits to their burrows. He’d dig them out, apologise as they squealed in fear, wring their necks. It was his living. So too for many over the centuries, is the tradition of fox-hunting. It was a cathartic journey to understand the fear of the fox … and the concomitant respect between the hunted and the hunter when a beagle puppy discovers a fox-cub hiding in a manor stable.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

International polemics in a complex, selfish world that will destroy everything we love.Making family documentaries. Investigative journalism.

What influenced you to enter your story to get performed?

Nice to hear someone read something I have written. To see if they ‘get’ the nuance in a chapter without the perspective of the full novel.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Don’t pitch to an audience. Write to appease something within.
Re-write until all paragraphs say ‘yes’. Writing is a private journey to somewhere. Collect fellow travellers along the way.

Novel Transcript Reading: OUTBREAK MUTINY, by Jay Sandlin

Performed by Val Cole

BUY Novel Online

Get to know the writer:

What is your novel about?

The Novel Comics is a shared universe of heroes and villains in an alternate timeline. In that sense, I hope to become, “the Stan Lee of the 21st Century.” The series takes place in a world with people who gain superpowers, the Outbreak Babies, and their struggles against the ruling Empire, The Reich. I label my chapters as “issues” for a comics style feel and will continue that trend in the Volume series. I will also release The Novel Comics Anthologies series for stories following other characters outside of the volume series.

See the back cover for a good description of the first book:

ALTERNATE HISTORY. WITH SUPERHEROES.

December 31, 1929, was a Day That Lived in Infamy. A war between extraordinary beings with superpowers ended in DEFEAT for the United States and her Allies. Darkness fell on a Golden Age of heroes at the hands of the REICH.

Ten years later, all still mourn the anniversary of the day the Reich seized control during Operation TripleReich. Life is a struggle for the Remnant States occupying the middle of the Old US.

A virus in the Chicago Zone reignites the conflict between good and evil as the Outbreak Mutineers gather to stop the plague’s deadly origins.

Join the Outbreak Babies: – Buccaneer, Clockwork, Atlas, and more- as they battle the Warlords of Reich. Their adventures stretch across the years and through the sewers, high-seas, and even a city park.

No Matter the Time or Place, their Choice is Clear:

Die Free or Live in Chains.

What genres would you say this novel is in?

Superheroes, Alternate History, Action/Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi

How would you describe this story in two words?

 Superhero Melee

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Star Wars

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

Bon Jovi- Wanted Dead or Alive

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher (Technically a series, but I can cheat)

What motivated you to write this story?

The cathartic release and escapism offered by writing is second to none. A blank word file contains infinite possibilities when I stare at the void of whiteness. It is waiting for me to create. I also have a love/hate relationship with the process. I am not a patient person by nature but had to learn to be as a writer. Every writer should learn that your stuff will always suck…at first. The first drafts are like crude blocks of stone in the hands of a sculptor. If the sculptor leaves only the inchoate form of his creation in the stone, it will never appear in a museum or be admired by on-lookers. It takes painstaking chipping away (editing) and constructive criticism from your peers to bring out the true potential.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

 George Carlin

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Aside from being a History Master’s student and searching for the esoteric mysteries of the past, my hobbies are improve acting and being a father. I am a member of the Sticky Wickets Improv Troupe (www.facebook.com/ItsTheWickets) and we perform monthly in the Shoals, AL area.

Above all my “hobby” is being the best dad I can be to my son Joel Sandlin. I got back into writing and pursuing higher education after he was born because I realized I had to set an example: I had to show my son through practice that attainable dreams can and should be pursued with smart planning and timing. Everything I do is for him.

What influenced you to enter your story to get performed?

My own acting in Community Theater for the last 22 years. I have always longed for an oral performance of my written words.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

The pains of the journey are temporary, but print is forever.

Prologue Novel Reading of Light of Hope, by S.T. Collins

Performed by Val Cole

BUY Book ONLINE

Get to know the writer:

What is your novel about?

Synopsis: Light of Hope by S. T. Collins introduces the lead character, Vikki Nelson, a 30-something divorcée who has just been hired as a case manager. The central theme of this fictional novel is domestic violence, but it also includes relationship issues, romance, office politics, and takes place at a social service agency: the Light of Hope, in Pittsburgh, PA. Although Vikki’s main focus in life has always been to help others, she can’t help it when she falls for her boss. Their relationship is passionate and forbidden, but it fills a void in Vikki’s heart. Her boss, Robert Cuccio, is so unlike Vikki’s abusive ex-husband. With all of the recent publicity about domestic violence in today’s society, S. T. Collins hopes that this book is not only entertaining, but will help empower those victims of domestic violence to change their lives for the benefit of their families.

What genres would you say this novel is in?

I would describe Light of Hope as a combination of a contemporary fiction in which the primary theme is a romantic suspense with a domestic violence theme.

How would you describe this story in two words?

Passionate Crusader

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Titanic by James Cameron with Leonardo DeCaprio and Kate Winslet

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the most times in your life?)

A Day in the Life by the Beatles

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

What motivated you to write this story?

a psychic reading that foretold its publishing and the belief that I had led a tempestuous life

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would that be?

Cary Grant

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

As a former educator for over twenty years, I love to help others achieve success in their lives, especially when faced with great obstacles to overcome. I am planning to go back to school and become a psychologist who operates my own social services agency so that I may encourage the downtrodden to become empowered to change their lives for the better.

What influenced you to enter your story to get performed?

In bringing awareness to the underlying theme of my book: domestic violence, my desire is to demonstrate that anyone can be susceptible to physical or emotional abuse. I believed that a performance of my story would enlighten people to the societal scourge of domestic violence, which is often hidden from the public, in a way that would not only entertain the audience, but strike a chord within people to either advocate for violence victims, or as a victim become empowered to end the cycle of abuse through education and therapy. In addition, I want to remove the stygma of victimization as somehow being the fault of the abused who is relegated to a life sentence of misery.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

My advice is to be determined to write about what is important to you, and be willing to work diligently to impress your story into the minds and hearts of those who you want to influence.
