Novel Transcript Reading: ZAPINETTE GOES TO THE NORTH POLE (CHAPTER 1 & 2), by Albert Russo

Watch Chapter 1:

chapters 1 & 2 – Humorous fiction (5000 words) – synopsis:

Zapinette lives with her mother, a staunch ‘felinist’who owns a beauty parlor in Paris, as well as with Firmin, the latter’s boyfriend. The girl however feels much closer to her ‘Unky Berky’, in spite of the fact that he is “such a weirdo at times and can get on her bloomin nerves”. Through Firmin, ‘the vermin’, she learns that her beloved uncle is a ‘homey setchual’. They will travel to four continents together and the trips promise to be quite bumpy. She is part American, part French, part Italian and finds out, along her journeys to Africa and the Holy Land, that she has other origins too.

THE LITERARY REVIEW:
“… Be warned, Zapinette’s gems of insouciant wit tend to become infectious. This wise-child’s deceptively worldly innocence takes the entire gamut of human endeavor in its compass. Hardly anyone or anything escapes unscathed. Michael Jackson,Vittorio de Sica, Freddy Mercury, Mao Zedong, Bill and Hill, the Pope, Fidel Castro, and even Jesus of Nazareth all come under Zapinette’s delightfully zany fire as she “zaps” from topic to topic in an irrepressible flux. As the century of the double zeros is with us – 2017 -, we have seen the future and the future is sham. As a healthy dose of counter-sham, Zapinette should be on every brain-functional person’s reading list.”

Performed by actor Peter-Mark Raphael

Novel Transcript Reading: WHAT PASSES BETWEEN WOMEN by Patty Fischer

Performed by Val Cole

WHAT PASSES BETWEEN WOMEN by Patty Fischer

Get to know writer Patty Fischer:

1. What is your novel about?

This novel “What Passes Between Women” is a women’s fiction/crime drama of a circle of women very different from each other that create a close bond in the midst of a sensational murder case happened in the quaint city of Noblesville, Indiana.

2. Why should this novel be read by people?

The novel possesses a double distinction: criminal mind of a true psychopath embodied in the character of a most unlikely type of man, an intellectual paunchy middle-age Biology teacher. Where the murder takes place in this Midwestern quiet city, not a crime-riddled metropolis, much like the popular film “Fargo”.

3. How would you describe this novel in two words?

Edgy but Homespun.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

Witness for the Prosecution (1957) film

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

I have been working on this novel for the last nine months.

6. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

My favorite novel is “Memoir of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

I work as a high school custodian. One night a peculiar set of circumstances happened between two teachers late at night. My imagination and fascination with the criminal mind took over.

8. What artist would you love to have dinner with?

The artist I would love to have dinner with is Anthony Bourdain. A well-known chef all over the world, he is an artist in his own right. His uncanny way with words, and knowledge of good food, together to be defined as the perfect dining experience.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

As well as writing, I am quite passionate about painting.

10. What influenced you to enter the Novel Festival?

I came onto your site as I was on a search to promote my writing and find the adequate representation.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Some advice to pass on – Never stop writing because of rejections, no matter how many. Writing brings to me such a sense of accomplishment, and I keep learning as I write.

Novel Transcript Reading: Obiter Dicta by Lucien M

Watch the June 2016 winning novel reading.

Obiter Dicta by Lucien M

Performed by Marsha Mason

Get to know the writer:

1. What is your novel about?

A murder leaves a body on display at a Vancouver, Canada public space quickly followed by the assassination of the prime minister of British Columbia that leaves a public in shock. VPD Homicide investigate a trail that leads to various groups vying to grip the political future of British Columbia in their hands. Some seek to do so by democratic means while others pursue the route of armed force. Most disturbing are the groups that seek to establish a government ruled by the Judeo-Christian Ten Commandments that will then act as a springboard to the establishment of a global confederacy of Judeo-Christian states committed to a policy of maintaining their vision of the status quo until the advent of the Apocalypse.

2. Why should this novel be read by people?

From early childhood most of us are exposed to different forms of cookie cutter conformity. Common forms are strict ideologies that traditionally employ coercive forms of psychological terror or manipulation to impose the party line on the not so convinced. Freedom of thought, objective inquiry, and the scientific method are never part of this paradigm. Most disturbing is when conformity evolves into tyranny and unleashes a savage reign of terror. The resulting blood lust is a chapter written too many times in human history.

3. How would you describe this novel in two words?

Riveting suspense

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

One that comes to mind is “Minority Report”

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

I wrote the first draft in 1996

6. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

I Heard the Owl Call My Name- by Margaret Craven

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

The fate of Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake for daring to suggest that the stars were just distant suns surrounded by their own exoplanets. He also raised the possibility that these planets could even foster life of their own. Moreover, he insisted that the universe is in fact infinite. (per Wiki)

8. What artist would you love to have dinner with?

Martin Scorsese

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

karate, guitar, rhythmic studies, visual art, skiing, ice skating, language studies

10. What influenced you to enter the Novel Festival?

It was inspiring to discover a committee of professional writers and writing consultants that invited novel submissions. Not only would entering yield full feedback in the form of suggested revisions but also a possible reading by professional actors with subsequent on-line posting.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Stieg Larsson: He had written the Millennium crime trilogy for his own pleasure after returning home from his job in the evening (per Wiki)
