Interview with Arthur Butt:
Matthew Toffolo: What is the general theme and tone of your novel?
Arthur Butt: In ROD OF REALITY, first of my Fairyland Series, a boy, AJ, is sent to fairyland to rescue the Rod of Reality, the crystal holding the multi-dimensional universes apart. He, along with the elf princess Tanaquill, and two lizards, fulfill a prophecy of who will find the rod and place it back in its proper place. The rod is rescued from the goblin king, but AJ and the princess learn the prophecy is also a curse and the goblins will attack the fairy capital. AJ is sent back to the mortal world, however Tanaquill pleads convinces him to return and lead the elf army.
This was a fun book to write, along with the second in the series, GOBLIN WAR, and the soon to be released third in the series WORLD’S END. The tone of all three is upbeat, YA, two teens joking and fighting while they do a barnyard dance of young love.
MT: Why should people buy your novel?
AB: If you enjoy elves, dwarves, goblins, dragons and every other fairy creature you can name, you’ll love this series. Full of action and adventure, laughs, and wit, this series is a joy to read.
MT: How would you describe your novels in just two words?
1. AB: The bulk of my novels I would describe as Action/Adventure, however, I always try to add historical, and romantic elements also.
MT: What movie have you seen the most in your life?
AB: Movie? Probably “It’s a Wonderful Life”.
MT: Was being a novel writer something you’ve always dreamed of doing?
AB: I’ve always been a book a day (sometimes two) reader. I’ll read anything and everything. When you read this much you just have to start writing too. So many ideas, dreams.
MT: Do you have an all-time favorite novel? Have you read a novel more than once?
AB: All-time favorite novel? Many of them I’ve read over through the years. Probably the one I’ve read most is THE ROBE by Lloyd C. Douglas. I read it for Easter every year.
MT: What motivates you to write?
AB: My motivation for writing are the stories in my head. They’re always there, I might as well put them down. They don’t go away.
MT: What artist would you love to have dinner with?
AB: Probably Robert Heinlein. Started reading his stories in the 50’s and read everything he ever wrote.
MT: Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
AB: My first love is history, any sort.
MT: Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
AB: I’m not that bright to give good advice to others. Nevertheless, if I have to say something, I’d say, write it down and finish what you start.
