Get to know novelist Lorraine Pestell:

1. What is your novel about?

This reading is taken from the first book in a seven-part contemporary fiction serial, “A Life Singular”. The novels’ central themes are triumph over adversity, choosing right over wrong, and how one affects the other. It follows a successful rock star through the process of writing his autobiography after his soul-mate is killed by a bullet meant for him.

2. This transcript reading of your novel describes the aftermath of a murder trial. Can you tell us what lead to this scene?

Jeff Diamond, billionnaire rock star and outspoken advocate for the downtrodden and forgotten, was a key witness in the trial of his wife’s killer, Juan Antonio García.  He had apprehended the accused running from the crime scene, with no idea who he was and what he had done.  While still reeling from the pointless murder, his conscience is deeply troubled by the judicial system’s judgmental view of the world where someone’s backstory is relegated to the too-hard basket for the sake of due process and expediency.

3. How would you describe this novel in two words?

Challenging conventions.

4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?

“Crash”, directed by Paul Haggis and starring Don Cheadle (among many others!)

5. How long have you been working on this novel?

Over forty years! The idea for “A Life Singular” started out as a typical adolescent romance during my teens, and became a vital therapeutic tool as I learned to grapple with depression, suicidal tendencies and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I became serious about publishing in 2008, after several people encouraged me to write my own autobiography.  “Part One” was released in June 2013, and I hope to launch “Part Five” at the end of March 2016.

6. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

I couldn’t pick a single novel, but my favourite genre is European literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.  Each of my books is “twinned” with a classic novel which has inspired me.

7. What motivated you to write this novel?

I write primarily to preserve my own sanity and to occupy my time while I stay alive.  Using the universal theme of love and our fascination for celebrity, I seek to destigmatise difference of all kinds by introducing social justice topics into general fiction, to inform readers who may not understand the power of each individual’s backstory to influence behaviour.

8. What artist would you love to have dinner with?

Robin Williams, with whom I have tremendous affinity.  I’ll hopefully catch up with him in a better place!

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

My main goals for the “A Life Singular” serial are to inspire fellow sufferers of mental illness to rise above their symptoms and make the best of their lives, while encouraging non-sufferers to tolerate, support and even love us in our quest to survive in a hostile world.

10. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Since starting my journey as an author, having spent 30 years as an IT professional, my most valuable lesson has been that writing is the easy part!  The introversion required to write fiction needs to be coupled with promotional flair that’s often counterintuitive, but it’s essential that we master marketing in order to attract readers.
