Matthew Toffolo: What is the general theme and tone of your novel?

Sebastián Cardemil Muchnik: Los buenos argentinos (The Good Argentinians) is about a great conspirancy. A selected group of powerful people tries to manipulate the minds of thousands of childrens to create a great chaos. The novel it`s a mix of speculative fiction, sci-fi and historical.

MT: Why should people buy your novel?

SCM: I think the novel is about a very actual themes like brain control and mental manipulation, narrated in a very interesting way.

MT: How would you describe your novels in just two words?

SCM: Polemic, stimulating.

MT: What movie have you seen the most in your life?

SCM: Lot`s of movies. I`m a filmmaker too, so there is a lot of movies I love. Films of Orson Welles (Touch of evil, The Trial), Hitchcock (Vertigo), Billy Wider (Sunset Boulevard), Coppola (Apocalypse Now), Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfelas), and a lot of european films of Buñuel (Viridiana), Godard (Breathless), Antonioni (Blow up), Bergman (The Hour of the Wolf), Polansky (The Tenant) and many others was a big influence for me and I saw them many times.

MT: Was being a novel writer something you’ve always dreamed of doing?

SCM: Yes. I read a lot since I am a very young child. I remember when I was seven or eight years reading Julio Verne, H.G Wells, E.A.Poe, Stevenson and many others, and dreaming of doing something like that one day.

MT: Do you have an all-time favorite novel? Have you read a novel more than once?

SCM: Yes, of course. I read my favourite novels so many times: The Trial (Kafka), Crime and Punishment (Dostoievski), Lolita (Nabokov), The Heart of Darkness (Conrad), and many other. I hope to read them again and again.

MT: What motivates you to write?

SCM: It’s an impulse and a necessity to tell a story who obsesses me.

MT: What artist would you love to have dinner with?

SCM: Dinner? Orson Welles or Alfred Hitchcock. There are both great good food lovers.

MT: Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

SCM: movies, music, painting, science, philosophy, history, food and travels.

MT: Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

SCM: Write only when and if you need to.
