Read Poem: Psychotic American: Case of an Actus Reus1

Transcripted by: Sophia P. Csulak

Is there something you wish to say in your defense?
To those in the stands today, hold your hearty heirlooms of red in hand, archaic maybe
Recklessly engaged in casus belli2 for sin alone
Throat of shrill thrashes against chains
You there, amongst the masses, I fear to point out the serpent in my lungs
Before we began you were honest about your rap sheet
The collection of riches locked in that closeted chest
But I reached through the gap mens rea3 enacted
I didn’t mean to say I was bullet proof
Whole flocks saw your existence as malum in se4
Handling the examination while infected with rabies
If I smothered my hands into the chest cavity, I shall engage in articulo mortis5
Take my cajolery as a constitutional right! Slammed that midnight sewage toppling over
Testimony of the mind, argue ad hominem6
Petty crimes may bring me death but capital pleasure is all I gave you, of numerous counts
Fit to stand trial? I kneel out of hubris to the cause at hand
There was no monstrous crowd or sword of Damocles over my head
Aware in the moment Awake in the bed
Recall the story as I demonstrate your animus nocendi7
Resuscitate our love just to die it’s martyr
Autopsy success are my jus ad bellum8, miracle of man
Ipso Facto: the brain rewired for the asylum
