Get to know the writer:

What is your novel about?

ARIA is about people – their reaction to a never-heard-of plague: infectious amnesia with no cure and no immunity has been brought to Earth. This is a tale of survival, escape, people in desperate circumstances yet with love, lust and humour.

What genres would you say this story is in?

Medical mystery / apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic / horror yet with some humour / science fiction

How would you describe this story in two words?

Infectious amnesia

What movie have you seen the most in your life?

2001 Space Odyssey

What is your favorite song? (Or, what song have you listened to the
most times in your life?)

“Thriller” – Michael Jackson
“Your tiny hand is frozen” in Puccini’s La Boheme opera

Do you have an all-time favorite novel?

Mythago Wood – Robert Holdstock

What motivated you to write this story?

Riding my bicycle up a steep Welsh hill, I thought of my mother who’d suffered amnesia following a stroke. The notion burst in – what if amnesia was infectious, think of the ramifications? By the time I’d reached the top of the hill – luckily there’s a cafe, the Ponderosa at Horseshoe Pass in North Wales – the amnesia in my story idea had become incurable, no one has immunity, and you lose memory backwards at the rate of a year’s worth per week.

If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would
that be?

Ovid, so I could tell him that in spite of his exile from Rome 2000 years ago his poetry and ideas live on. And sing to him those Bob Dylan songs using Ovid’s lyrics.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Opera and cycling, grandkids and hiking.

What influenced you to enter your story to get performed?

I’m nearly deaf so rarely participate in performances. Even so, I had the urge to have some of ARIA so performed.
