tlbrownInterview with TL Brown

Matthew Toffolo: What is the general theme and tone of your novels?

TL: The whole idea and theme behind the novels would be the Professional Wrestling industry. Many say that life has plenty of drama, theater has plenty of drama, but I feel that the wrestling ring has more drama than both put together. You’re talking about people that train and prepare for the big moment where the big showdown takes place in, of course, that very ring.

MT: Why should people buy your novels?

TL: If you have ever enjoyed Pro Wrestling or even Mixed Martial Arts, then I feel that you might enjoy this series. This series is all about characters coming in, coming out and being built up around other characters both new and old.

MT: How would you describe your novels in just two words?

TL: Dramatic Action

MT: What movie have you seen the most in your life?

TL: Tough one to call. I would say that it would be a three way tie between The Sandlot, The Quest and Mortal Kombat.

MT: Was being a novel writer something you’ve always dreamed of doing?

TL: YES!! Growing up, I was always a big fam of stories. I remember being a kid and asking my Mother if she could get me the latest Goosebumps book. Not the latest toy or video game (though those were up there), I would always be thrilled if I got my hands on a book I knew was going to be good.

Later on, I would just imagine stories in the world of fan fiction and soon would deviate from that and started making my own characters. It really all grew from there, organically. Then I started making friends online with people that were all about the same thing. We made characters all of the time and it was life-defining for all of us involved.

MT: Do you have an all-time favorite novel? Have you read a novel more than once?

TL: Goosebumps books were always the best books ever growing up. However, I don’t do favorites with books and I rarely ever re-read books.

MT: What motivates you to write?

TL: To me, writing is like an escape. Life gets you down, build up the world you created and love. It’s a great way to let out your emotions and a great way to develop ideas and your own thoughts as a whole.

MT: What artist would you love to have dinner with?

TL: That’s debatable between Christopher Moore, Vince Russo, Brent Weeks, R.L. Stine and Bobby Adair. I love all of their work and for all different reasons:

-Moore: His comedic fun mixed with the unpredictable nature of his books

-Russo: His politics in the wrestling business as both a writer and a booker of the events

-Stine: Defining my childhood through his work

-Adair: Being a fellow independent writer

MT: Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

TL: Self defense, reading stories, psychology and puzzles.

MT: Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

TL: Just keep writing, no matter what, even if you have nothing to write about.
