Transcript Reading of CONTRARY WARRIORS: BLOOD LEGACY
1. What is your novel about?
Blood Legacy is the second volume in the Contrary Warriors series and kicks off one year after SOE agent Cleo Deseronto escapes torture at a CIA black site. Now on a simple mission to notify an American Senator of his daughter’s death, Cleo and her stalwart cousin Bo are drawn into the web of an old-time spymaster. It’s a conspiracy that threatens to alter the future of the civilized world, and trying to stop it might just make Cleo and Bo the most wanted women in America.
2. Why should this novel be read by people?
No matter what your age, gender, or background, you’ll find something of who you are, and who you want to be, in these iconic characters. The Contrary Warriors series is unique in scope and voice. Rarely do we find iconic Indigenous characters in modern day lives and in this world women and minorities do more than form a backdrop for their white male colleagues. Readers will find the pages littered with authentic people from all walks of life and facing the same day-to-day challenges…except for getting shot at, shot down, shot up, and everything else!
3. How would you describe this novel in two words?
Nonstop Action!
4. What movie have you seen the most in your life?
Aliens!
5. How long have you been working on this novel?
Blood Legacy was a solid, full-time, six-month effort.
6. Do you have an all-time favorite novel?
Eye of the Needle, the spy thriller, by Welsh author Ken Follett.
7. What motivated you to write this novel?
Contrary Warriors, book 1 in the series, was a slow start and took years to write. At the time I was recovering from a near death incident and wanted to share some experiences in a safe and neutral way. Writing fiction made sense but the thriller, the action adventure, leaped from my imagination and onto the page determined to be heard.
8. What artist would you love to have dinner with?
I would love to share a meal with Adam Fortunate Eagle, the original Contrary Warrior.
Of course, if he wasn’t available I would invite WEB Griffin , just to hear him talk about how much he’s written over the years and I would have to invite a few others too; say Margaret Atwood, not to hear how she writes but where she comes up with her ideas; Thomas King for his stories of urban NDN’s, Thomson Highway and Joseph Boyden, because I could, and of course Camilla Gibb, if for no other reason than to regale in her smile!
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
The Pacha Mama (our sacred mother earth). We only have one inhabitable planet and using her as if she is easily replaceable is shortsighted to say the least.
Of course, as a pilot I’m a total aviation queen. That may seem to heavily contrast the above, but as an engineer I know we have alternatives already available, and have been working on plans for solar powered GA aircraft.
10. What influenced you to enter the Novel Festival?
I think it’s important to hear criticism in order to improve our work.
11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
Write. Write every day. Write about everything, then write some more. When you just can’t work on something, switch up to something else. Stretch yourself; write about things you don’t like, write about things that make you uncomfortable, and then write even more. Your best work will come once you’ve turned writing into an autonomic function. Think of writing as a muscle, once you get it in shape, you will have the power to create anything you can imagine.
